Places guide

A little help for your next favorite.

Learn to save places, make lists, and share your recommendations.

Open my map ↗

Create your map

  1. Sign in with Google. Places creates your personal map when you first sign in.
  2. Choose My map to open the editor. Opening the Places home page while signed in also takes you there.

Save or edit a place

  1. In your map editor, choose Add a place. Paste a Google Maps link and choose Use this location, or drop a pin on the map.
  2. Enter the place name and times visited. Use 0 for somewhere you want to visit.
  3. Optionally add tags, a photo, dishes to order, and your notes. Save your changes.
  4. To update a place later, select it in your editor and edit its details.

Make “yes’s teppanyaki list”

  1. Add the tag 鐵板燒 to each teppanyaki restaurant you want in the list, then save.
  2. A shared tag groups places into a list. One place can appear in several lists by having several tags.
  3. In Public sharing, select 鐵板燒 as the list to share, then preview it and copy the link.
  4. The link shows that tag’s places and stays current when you add or edit them. Custom list titles such as “yes 的鐵板燒清單” are not available yet; the list currently uses its tag name.

Find a saved place

  1. Use the search box to find places by their name, tags, notes, or dishes.
  2. Choose a tag, visited filter, or sort order to narrow your list. On mobile, switch between the list and map views.
  3. Choose View place to open its dedicated recommendation page, or open Google Maps for directions.

Share a map, list, or place

  1. For your whole map, select All places in Public sharing and copy the link. Select a tag to share only that list.
  2. For one place, choose Share place on its card or dedicated page.
  3. Recipients can view public links without signing in. A public link does not give anyone permission to edit your map.

Follow someone’s recommendations

  1. Open their public map and choose Follow map. If asked, sign in and confirm the follow.
  2. Open Following to find the maps you follow. Open a map to see its current places.
  3. Following covers the creator’s whole map, including all tag lists. It does not currently send update notifications.
  4. To keep an individual recommendation in your own collection, choose Save to my map instead.

Add Places to your Home Screen

  1. On iPhone, open Places in Safari, open the Share menu, and choose Add to Home Screen. Keep Open as Web App enabled if offered.
  2. On Android, open Places in Chrome and use its menu to choose Install app or Add to Home screen. The wording depends on the browser.
  3. Open the Places icon to launch in its own app window. Signed-in users go to their personal map.
  4. An internet connection is still required. Installing Places does not download places or background maps for offline use.

Frequently asked questions

Are my places private?

Places maps and recommendations are public. Anyone with a public link can view them without an account. Only the map owner can edit. Avoid adding information you do not want to share.

Do visitors need an account?

No account is needed to view a shared map, tag list, or place. Signing in is needed to create your own map, follow maps, or save someone’s recommendation.

Do I need to create a separate list?

No. Add the same tag to several places, then share that tag. A place can belong to multiple tag lists.

Will an old share link update?

Yes. Map and tag-list links show the current saved content. If you rename or remove a tag, copy and share the new list link.

Does following send notifications?

Not currently. Following keeps maps together so you can return to them; it does not subscribe you to email or push notifications.

Does the installed app work offline?

Not yet. The home-screen version uses the same online Places service. Offline places and offline maps are separate features.
